Computer classes are held once a week for all classes from Kindergarten through 8th grade. In addition, teachers have the option of using laptop computers during their other subjects to supplement and integrate their curriculum with technology. Students also have the opportunity to borrow a laptop and take it to their classroom during study halls to catch up on work.
SJS has two computer labs: The computer room holds 30 laptops and is used by the primary grades. The mobile lab holds 24 laptop and is used by the middle and junior high school students. Teachers also each have a laptop. All laptops are Apple MacIntosh and are linked to a main server in a wireless network. Teachers often use their interactive white boards in class to show students a lesson in a follow-along format.
Faculty at the primary level begin teaching proper keyboarding and older students are required to improve their typing speed and accuracy with a goal of typing 35 words per minute by 8th grade graduation.
Primary teachers use many applications to teach writing, reading, math and spelling skills and often use the internet to access education sites and games which keep students entertained as well as educated.
Students in 4th through 5th grade begin a more in depth study of word processing and graphic design, which are reviewed, practiced and broadened at each successive grade level.
Upper grades also learn:
- internet navigation, research and ethics
- data entry and spreadsheet graphing
- social networking ethics
- digital photography
- slide show presentations
- audio presentations
- video presentations
A new learning tool which SJS is implementing is the Virtual Portfolio (VP) idea. In these VPs, student create a slide show which saves examples of their work, thoughts, art, projects, reflections, etc.. These slide shows are then presented to parents at the end of the year to display what students have learned and how they have grown at SJS.
Other technology equipment available at SJS are digital cameras, video cameras, color printers, scanners, electronic keyboards, projectors and flash memory drives.
Per requirements of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, students in kindergarten through 3rd grade are graded on the OSU scale (outstanding, satisfactory, unsatisfactory). Students in 4th through 8th grade are graded on the A, B, C, D, F scale.
