A STEM Designated School
A STEM Designated School
This week all 7th graders worked on creating posters to advertise the Halloween caramel apple sale fundraiser for our upcoming Washington DC trip. Some students really followed a caramel apple theme and others went with a Halloween theme all turned out great.
"This week our 7th graders thought about our 7 habits of mind our school focuses on: to be inquisitive, collaborative, open-minded, resilient, resourceful, reflective, and innovative. I asked each student to research what that word meant, and then come up with words, ideas, or pictures that help support that word."
"The past two weeks 6th and 7th grade have been working on writing grammatically correct bios for dogs in the shelter to help them get adopted. This is about a three week long PBL Assignment where the students are being reflective everyday. The students are working on punctuation, capitalization, editing, and following grammar rules. On 10/08, Greg from the APL came to talk to our students about the adoption process as well as how the staff at the APL draft their dogs' bios. Our students not only worked on their writing skills but also got to meet Nosey Parker, the cutest puppy this side of the Alleghenies."
"This week 7th graders read informational texts on Olympians and the Olympic games. The student also researched how fast the US Olympic runners could run the 100m race. We then timed ourselves to see how fast we could run 20m, 50m, and 100m. This was done on a volunteer basis. We then calculated the data and compared how fast we can run compared to Olympians. While some students were not surprised how far away they were from Jesse Owens time, some were surprised at how much of a difference it was"
This week the 7th graders worked on a project that focuses on how to make schools more sustainable. After researching to figure out their focus they were to model the changes they were making out of play-dough. Below, you will see (blue group: a farm to table to aid in a food supply issue and eliminate more fossil fuels, pink group: a new nature centered playground, orange group: multiple small changes that can make a big impact, and purple group: using sporks to combate plastic waste.)
Also on two side notes: the students have said that one of the chargers is not actually charging their computers.
For Flex Friday this week we are doing a project on the Olympics (specifically track stars for the USA), maybe Jesse Owens in particular? If not, no biggie, but I figured I would check.
Thanks so much for your help! - Ms. Schwochow
"Welcome back 7th graders. I cannot wait to meet you all. We have an exciting year ahead of us filled with learning. I look forward to meeting you at the open house!"
Thanks!
Ms. Schwochow
What a year we had this year! So much learning and growing took place. Keep reading and learning throughout the summer.. Have fun and be safe!!!
One of the ways 7th grade has explored China has been by creating their own Great Walls of China! They used their creative and stemmy brains to collaborate with fellow classmates on this project.
By reading and comparing the story "A Simple Act" to the excerpt from An Invisible Thread, following the unlikely friendship between Laura Schroff and Maurice Maczyck, we are learning the true meaning of friendship. We created something that represents the "invisible thread," that is something that pulls someone to do something. This are some of the seventh graders creations:
